Visual Support: Greetings

-- by Sarah, Gaby's mom

People with autism are notorious for not initiating social interaction. Certainly, this is a big problem for Gaby. One way we tried to address this was with a greeting chart that was designed to help her meet one of her IEP speech goals. The list/chart had potential scripted options for greetings: "hello," "hi," "good morning," etc. and boxes where she could check off the people she had initiated a greeting with each day. She was supposed to do at least 3 and this helped her remember what to say and helped her track her progress in meeting her daily goal.
