Picture checklist to teach kids about the work and mental load involved in pet care, shown on clipboard and iPhone

The Trip Clip® offers printable activities to teach life skills, reduce screen time, and help special needs kids.

Putting your kids in charge of pet care (or at least some of it) is a great way for them to learn life skills and take on mental load. They can start small by feeding the pet and then remembering to do it every day without reminders. From there, you can put them in charge of keeping supplies like litter, poop bags, and treats on hand. If you want to get really advanced, ask them to help with vet appointments and arranging pet care for vacations. It’s great practice for not just doing individual tasks like picking up a prescription but also for paying attention to all the mental load involved in fully caring for a pet.
